Fixed the problem by shrinking the C drive with Windows' Disk Management. I had Ubuntu on one, and Windows Vista on the other. More or less, this is how I see it. so the commands fixboot fixmbr and bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd are not executable.

Either way, I am clueless at this point. I got the image from an old drive off an old computer that died on me. I accepted the defaults as well, so not sure what you mean by not having a system partition. Run it and let Windows fix the drive. Windows 10 Bootrec
I guess I have deleted the MBR and the remaining part of the disk is still intact. It booted up after I replaced the reg files in system32\config with the hive files in system32\config\regBack and the windows logs showed disk errors with bad blocks / sectors. Choose the language, time, currency, etc and click Next. I installed GRUB from opensuse and modified my 'menu.lst' so that it pointed to (hd0,0) in order for it to find the new Vista at (hd1,0).
If you have the install dvd , when you get to the "Install Now" screen you can select "Repair my computer" at the bottom left of that screen . And when i go to command prompt there is no C: drive and no windows version to find. There is no operating system to repair or select in the windows 7 system recorvery list of operating systems. It includes the MBR but not separately and I'm not sure how to restore it from the image.
