Started the mac, and all was well: reformatted and on its way. The computer will start up using the install media. Quit and select the volume on the 10.6 installer and install it. Select the appropriate level of security / speed for deleting your data and click OK then Erase.
It's been a day since I installed OSX on the new SSD and I haven't had any problems. Next step: Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list.
