I also have original Digikey chips that working perfect now. The process should be very similar for other versions of Windows. The number may vary depending on how many USB devices you have plugged into your computer. If you plug in your FTDI, open the Arduino IDE, go to ‘Tools -> Serial Ports’, and see nothing, you need the drivers!
If you need to clean a previous install of the FTDI driver from your system and/or clear any COM Ports aded to the registry then you should obtain the CDM Uninstaller Newer versions of Arduino boards, such as the Uno, use a different communication IC, and they will not be covered in this tutorial. The problem I am seeing involves installation of the driver, not what you described.
